Ehrle Howard’s fascination with Japan was sparked while living in Tokyo, a connection that has only deepened through his Japanese wife and their frequent returns to the country. He speaks Japanese and is a lifelong student of its art and culture, bringing an insider’s perspective to his writing.
A trained pilot with a passion for aviation, a traveller at heart, and a student of anthropology with a deep curiosity about the world’s cultures and customs, Ehrle also holds a lifelong love of the sea and the simple joy of snorkelling beneath its surface.
He is the author of the international thriller series featuring art-theft detective Ai Nishihara and British investigator Noah Davies. Following their debut in Tsunami and the high-stakes journey through Beijing and the remote landscapes of Tibet in Sharp Eyes, Ehrle is currently at work on the third book in the series, Reckoning. He lives in Sydney.

Ann Howard, the author, leads an adventurous and richly varied life. She has ridden elephants through the jungles of Sumatra, rock-climbed in Tahiti, walked on the rim of an active Anak Krakatoa, completed a free-fall parachute jump, and navigated the white waters of the Franklin River.
Originally from London, Ann earned two Master’s degrees at the University of New South Wales, before leaving academia to establish tarka publishing, now run by her youngest son, Ehrle. Ann has devoted her life energy to the arts in all forms.
She fell in love with Dangar Island on her first visit in the 1970s and, in 1974, purchased The Pavilion—the remains of the property built by H.C. Dangar. She began restoring it, uncovering the island’s rich and layered history. Meeting members of the Dangar family and their circle, she was gifted stories and photographs that deepened her connection with the place.
A long-time friend of over 40 years, Graham Wilson, himself a frequent visitor and photographer of the island, proposed that they make a film together. Graham had filmed events associated with some of Ann’s book launches, and their collaboration, What Shall I Do With This Island? evolved over several years, drawing on the enthusiasm and spirited participation of local islanders—some of whom delighted in dressing up for the camera.
Ann and Graham hope the film will stand as a legacy—an honest and heartfelt record of Dangar Island’s history, shaped by the lives of those who have called it home or been drawn to its shores.
